The Best Hashtags for Portrait Photography

As a marketing tool, there's no disputing that Instagram is a vital took for attracting portrait photography clients, but which hashtags should you use?

Depending on how miles you've already got on the clock, you might be old enough to remember that the # sign used to be referred to as the “pound” sign. Well, those days are long gone, and the # symbol is now most commonly referred to as a hashtag. And whether you know what one is or not, trust me, they are an important feature of Instagram, and a useful way to attract portrait photography clients.

If you've not been using hashtags, they may be the secret to portrait photography success in 2021. Because Instagram is by far the best social media platform for photographers, no matter the genre you work in. In case you need convincing, are two reasons for this: 1) Instagram is the main visual platform currently, with the largest audience of people looking for images. 2) You can create a rather large user-base on Instagram, where your network of followers can keep up to date with your latest photography.

But, What is a Hashtag?

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines a hashtag as “a word or phrase preceded by the symbol # that classifies or categorizes the accompanying text”. Simply put, posts with hashtags are able to be indexed by social media networks, which allows the post to be searched and discovered by other users.

If you are familiar with Instagram, you'll know how important both the caption and hashtag are for images. Without them, the overall reach and branding for your images will suffer! To get far-reaching engagement, you need to use specific and specialized hashtags that allow you to break into the Instagram photography communities. This post will help you choose the best hashtags in the most popular photography genres and niches.

How Many Hashtags Can I Use?

Instagram allows a maximum of 30 hashtags per post. If you want to sneak some extra in, you can add a comment to your post and write additional hashtags in there, but I wouldn't advise it. Instagram's marketers recommend avoiding portrait photography hashtag stuffing, and that the ideal number of hashtags is somewhere between 5 – 11 per post.

You need to remember that it's all about using the most relevant photography hashtags, random hashtags may actually do more harm than good. Another trap that some Instagram users may fall into is creating their own hashtags. Avoid making your own hashtags unless you already have a large following associated and engages with your branding. One important step to take is to do research before using hashtags. Find the hashtags that are most used by the users you wish to invite, and use those with consistency. This will encourage your user base to see your work, hopefully multiple times, and you'll have the ability to really spark a community that you stand out within.
